Parrot Food

A healthy, balanced diet is crucial for quality of life and longevity of your parrot. However, feeding your colorful friend with food made specially for parrots may not provide him all the nutrients required for overall health and well-being.

In wild, parrots mostly eat seeds and thus seed mixtures seem an obvious choice. Unfortunately, every seed mixture is not a good choice. Most seed mixtures contain large amounts of sunflower seeds which are high in fat and do not contain all the necessary nutrients. For that reason you should choose a seed mixture that contains variety of different seeds.

Parrot pellets are perhaps a better choice than seed mixtures because they are generally low in fat and high in vitamin content. In addition, parrot cannot pick out his favorite seeds only which means that pellets may provide more balanced diet than seed mixtures. However, keep in mind that there is a great difference in quality from one brand to another. Instead of purchasing the most expensive one rather choose pellets with little or no artificial additives such as preservatives, dyes, flavor enhancers, etc.

There is no unique view about the best food for parrots. Regardless whether you feed your bird with seed mixture or pellets you should also regularly give him fresh fruits and vegetables which are high in vitamins and minerals. In addition to nutritionally balanced food, you should also make sure that your bird has always access to clean water.
