Cat Breeds

Unlike dogs that have been selectively bred for thousands of years, cat breeds are relatively new. At the time of writing there are over 70 recognized cat breeds, while The Cat Fanciers’ Association, Inc. recognizes only 41 cat breeds. Besides registered cat breeds which represent only 1% of cat population there are also countless varieties and types of domesticated non pedigree cats.

Siamese is one of the most popular and best known cat breeds. It originates from Thailand and is believed to descended from the sacred temple cats of Siam. Siamese is distinctive for its triangular shaped head and thin snout, elegant and slim body, short and soft hair and pointed color. Siamese often bond strongly on only one person.

Persian is one of the most popular cat breeds all over the world primarily because of its fine long hair. Their originate from Iranian plateau and are distinctive for extremely shortened muzzle.

Sphynx is best known for lack of coat. The breed is a natural mutation originating from Canada. Due to lack of coat the Sphynx is very sensitive to low temperatures and sunlight. They might develop a sunburn similar to human.

British Shorthair is one of the most popular cat breeds in the UK and is notable for its dense coat. Blue is most common coat color although the breed comes is many colors. They have a very stable character, like human company and love being petted. British Shorthair is also appropriate for apartment living.

American Curl originating from the United States is distinctive for its unusual curled ears which are result of a spontaneous mutation. They come in longhaired and shorthaired versions.
