Rex Cat Breeds

In addition to longhaired, shorthaired, semi-longhaired and hairless cat breeds there are also rex breeds which are distinctive for curly or wavy fur which is a result of genetic mutations or selective crossbreeding.

Cornish Rex is one of the best known rex cat breeds originating from England. The breed is distinctive for its fine and curly hair which is a result of mutation as well as for big eyes and large ears. They are very sensitive to cold temperatures and are not suited for outdoors.

Devon Rex greatly resembles the Cornish Rex and also originates from England. Their coat is very soft and curly and comes in many color variations. The breed is also distinctive for big eyes and large and slightly rounded ears.

German Rex is also notable for short and slightly curly coat which is longer and more thick than in Devon and Cornish Rex breeds.

LaPerm is internationally recognized cat breed originating from the United States. The breed is the best known for its curly and wavy coat which comes in many color variations.

American Wirehair is notable for unique wirehair coat which is a result of natural mutation. They are described as easy to take care for, calm, quiet, reserved as well as resistant to diseases.

Selkirk Rex is internationally recognized cat breed with highly curled hair which comes in two variations: long and short in different colors and patters. The breed was developed by crossing between unusually coated feline found in a shelter and a black Persian.
